Best Wildlife Photography Equipments You Should Have in 2024

Wildlife photography is all about showing your imagination about wildlife right through your pictures. But for this, you need to get the best wildlife photography equipment. Without good gear, you can barely click one good photograph. Because the objects or animals you will be targeting are always on the move. So getting the right gear is a must.

Professional wildlife photographers always avoid carrying any heavy equipment. Because heavy gear is hard to move. A nice compact and lightweight gear is more suitable. In this article, I will be mentioning to you some of the best gear for wildlife photography.

What equipment does a wildlife photographer use?

Successful wildlife photographers usually never use gear built with basic equipment. Even for beginner wildlife photographers, it is absolutely important to get gear with quality equipment. The equipment you use needs to fulfill all your wildlife photography demands. The image quality has to be good and the shooting speed also needs to be perfect.

Getting out there in the wild and take photos is always a big challenge. But with the right equipment like a quality camera, a good tripod, wide-angle lenses, Extra batteries, teleconverter, monopods, bean bag, rain covers, flashlight or lamp, and fast memory cards you can do the job perfectly.

A quality camera

The first and foremost condition of wildlife photography is to have a quality camera in your hand. There are many types of wildlife cameras out in the market like mirrorless cameras, trail cameras, full-frame cameras, DSLR’S. Usually, the companies that make the best versions of these cameras are Nikon, Canon, and Sony. But you can still buy any other camera if you are comfortable.

Wildlife-photography-kit

Remember that the camera you are buying has a good ISO setting even under low light. Because you will have to click those photographs under wild conditions. You should also notice the slow shutter speeds and sensor of the camera. Only a quality camera can give you sharper images.

Good tripod

Tripods are also extremely important in wildlife photography. While taking pictures in the wild you will have to face many complications. There will be wind, low light and a lot of noise. So all of these conditions will do everything to generate a camera shake.

tripod for wildlife photography

A tripod in these situations can be very helpful as you can attach your camera to that and avoid the shake. Sometimes due to low light, you have to adjust the shutter speed of your camera too much which is very difficult. But if you have a tripod then doing this task will be easy. Besides that, it can also relieve you from carrying a heavy camera all day long. So try to buy a compact, strong, and lightweight tripod.

Wide-angle lens

There are many lenses for wildlife photography in the market. You will find quality zoom lenses, macro lenses, prime lenses, wide-angle lenses, normal lenses, telephoto lenses, and so on. You can keep all types of lenses with you to take pictures according to the moment.

But my personal opinion for you will be to always keep a wide-angle lens with you. Wide-angle shots are always admired by wildlife enthusiasts. The reason behind it is that wide-angle can completely describe the scene and rare moments of the wild. But for this, you have to keep the camera closer. You should always go closer to the animals if there is a chance or you can even keep the camera in that particular zone and operate from distance. There is another way of using a teleconverter which you are about to read next!

Teleconverter

Professional wildlife photographers never forget to carry a teleconverter with them. Because every time they cannot go closer to the animal or keep the camera near the spot. This is when the teleconverter comes to work.

A teleconverter can extend the focal length of a lens and offer you more reach. So if you attach a teleconverter with your lens you can get the extra focal length and take rare shots from distance. But make sure that your teleconverter is a good one. Because they will certainly impact the image quality. They might not cause-effect to the focus or image color but you may notice a little bit of loss of light.

A good Binocular or Monocular

A quality binocular or monocular can be most effective in wildlife photography. Since wildlife photography includes many challenges and not every time you can get the picture you want due to risk. So if you have a binocular or monocular you can just use it to find those rare moments or beautiful scenes of the wild with it.

Binocular-for-wildlife-photography

Due to the immense zoom effect of binoculars or monoculars, you can spot any incident happening from a long way out and go closer to take the image with your camera. A good binocular or monocular offers 8x, 10x, or even more ability to zoom. So do not waste any more charge of your camera and just get binocular or monocular for the hard work.

Extra batteries

It is always necessary for a wildlife photographer to carry extra batteries in his gear. Because it is not like you have to go for a few hours in the wild and you can just easily get nice photographs within an hour.

extra batteries for wildlife photography

In wildlife photography, you have to spend hours and sometimes even days to get a good picture. So there is always a chance of the battery of your camera running out. If you carry extra batteries you don’t have to wait until the current battery is charging and use another battery instantly. It will save your time and make the work easy.

Bean bag

A Bean bag can be very helpful whenever you are on the move. A bean bag allows you to attach your camera and lens to a vehicle. During wildlife photography, anything can happen anytime. You can even notice abnormal moments sitting inside your vehicle.

So if you already attach your camera with a vehicle with the help of a bean bag then you take those shots and beautiful pictures sitting inside a vehicle. A bean bag also offers stability like tripods so you will not need to adjust a tripod as well in your vehicle.

A good rain cover

While doing wildlife photography you will have to roam through jungles, mountains, hill stations, and many other places like that. In those areas, there is no guarantee of the weather. You can see a clear sunny day in the morning and a wild rain in the evening.

Sometimes it rains all day long. But that doesn’t mean you are going to stop your job and sit all day. If you have a rain cover with you then it will protect your camera, lenses, and tripod all at the same time. So you can save time and even capture beautiful wildlife photos safely in the rain.

Don’t Miss: Tips and tricks for Travel Photography

Flashlight or lamp

There will always be a scarcity of light in the forests and mountains. So a flashlight or lamp can be very useful. A flashlight or lamp that can provide a good amount of light for a long time can increase your chances of getting influential pictures under the dark. The most major pictures of wildlife photography occur in the morning or the evening. So you can never grab these moments in your camera if you don’t have a good flashlight or lamp.

Conclusion

Wildlife photography is always fun and exciting. There is nothing more joyous to wildlife photographers than capturing those beautiful raw moments of wild nature. You can do the task expertly if you have the right gear. A good and quality set of gear with specialized equipment will always be expensive. But there are always alternative options in pricing. Mostly the equipment mentioned above is enough for wildlife photography. But for better preparation, you can add other equipment as well. Hope this article allows you to set up your gear for wildlife photography!

Photography 101: Landscape Photography Tips for Beginners

Hello Readers, welcome to our 1st chapter of landscape photography tips for beginners. In this lesson we’ll discuss on landscape photography definition, idea, time & place selection, appropriate camera settings & finally some tips for beginners. Hope you enjoy.

What is Landscape Photography?

Landscape photography basically deals with natural sceneries. The captured scenes of outdoors, lifestyles, etc. those can express a great source of your observation on your surrounding is landscape photos. So, according to me, the landscape photography definition is The wide range of photos of free nature which has a deep meaning & long-term purpose.

Landscape Photography Ideas

As a photographer, you must be able to make the right ideas of landscape photography. Maybe you are thinking what actually I am telling about the term ‘ideas’. The ‘term’ ideas include what is your object & how this object will be taken by your gadget. You can take o photo of a green paddy field or a wide white desert or maybe your object is a blue ocean with white billows. Just keep remember a photo is not a photo, it’s a story. So whatever you take make sure your photo defines an idea and a deep meaning.

Perfect Location of Landscape Photography

Perfect Location Selection

As in landscape photography you’ve to deal with nature, so the perfect location should include more natural objects with some handsome artistic meaning. For me, I always choose a place far from urban crowds & the presence of people. To make your photo more meaningful populate yourself into the nature as much as you can.

Appropriate Time for Snaps

To get the right color of sky, most of the times you need to set your sail at the time of sunrise or sunset. But since, it is tough to at present maximum photographer choose the time before sunset. Besides, the direct sunlight of noon is also good for some kinds of photography. But in that case you need to have a good knowledge of ISO as it deals with the light sensitivity.

Appropriate Camera Settings

Many Beginners use auto focus for landscape. In fact, in the latest dslr cameras let us shoot with auto modes. But as a skill seeker you must use the manual modes and depending on the surroundings you should set the following setting by yourself:

  • Aperture: For landscape my suggestion will be open for aperture and take aperture as much as you can.
  • Shutter Speed: It depends on how fast your object is. If they you want to take some running horses into a forest you must set a good shutter speed. Again if you want to take a normal beach you can set it lower.
  • ISO: For a dim light area use the maximum ISO, for a sunny area minimize it and in normal light use from common ISO numbers (200,400).

4 Kickass Landscape Photography Tips for Beginners

Avoid Empty Sky

Landscape Photography Dimension

Take Proper dimension

Most of the time to compose a good depth of field photographers divide their photo by foreground and background. In foreground they keep the object and then make a blurred or other background as the want. But I’ll suggest you to divide your ambiance into 3 parts: foreground, mid-ground and background.

I know the world mid-ground seems unusual to you. But as a viewer when we see a picture all we try to make a real three dimensional view into our mind. And if you only take two dimension the photo will look beautiful, but if you popular your photo by three dimensions it’ll talk to your viewer & make your viewer completely mesmerized.

Avoid Hand Shakes

At my beginning stage, my main problem was my hands. I didn’t know why I always shook my hands while taking photo. Then I went to an expert & he said not to breathe from before 5 seconds to after 5 seconds of every snap. Shaking hand also very problematic in sports or night-time photo shoot. So try to avoid shaking hands if you have it.

Then I came back & stop breathing for 15 seconds during the snaps. The change was notable & from then to now I follow this rule of stop breathing during any type of photography. I suggest you to do the same & see by yourself how the shakes stop.

Finally, I’ll say keep practicing because the practical experience can teach you more than any theoretical tips. So keep practicing & take more & more mind-blowing photos of nature.

Wildlife Photography Tips for 2021

Be an Early Riser

Animals don’t use Facebook & they have no necessity to be awakened at the night. So, they sleep & rise early. It was just a joke by the way, but don’t take it lightly. Because according to a study the most beautiful wildlife photos were taken within 1-2 hours after the sunrise. There are two reasons: one is the light which seems really awesome in the morning & another is the environment which remains very cool at that time.

Take Your Position

Take a position from where you can take your photo as much as eye level position from the object. From the ground don’t try to take photos of the object standing above the hill & from the hill don’t target the ground. In a similar manner don’t shoot a small creature off the ground, from your standing position. So, in a nutshell, the main goal of your taking position will be keeping your lens straight to the middle of the object & then press the shoot button.

wildlife photography tutorial

Stay above the Animal

A lot of photographers try to follow running animals & capture them from behind. It may be okay for landscape photography based on wildlife. But if you are targeting primarily for focusing wildlife then capturing them from behind is really a bad idea. You must remember strong eye contact is the strongest communication medium for the viewer to the object. And that’s why target the eyes of animals or insects so that when someone watches your photo, he or she feels that the animal or insect is also looking at him/her. This thing will make your photo live & real.

Must Read: Gears You Must Have for Wildlife-shoot

Maintain Distance from the Animal

Don’t try to be closer for taking photos because the more closure you’ll be to an animal the more distracted it’ll be. And if you go more closure then it may escape. And since when you move straight to the animal it’ll escapes for sure, so pretend to ignore the animals and take a zigzag path to get closer to the animal. And when you get your range, start waiting for the perfect moment of hunting, eating or any other you targeted.

wildlife photography 2021

Keep the Sun & Wind Behind

The wind is always a big source of noise mainly because of its vibration & also for the sands & other elements of it. So, try to avoid the direct wind to your lens. Besides, don’t forget about your stabilizer option. Another factor is sunlight. It can create a wide variety of spectrum on your photo that can create a mass distraction. Even sometimes sunlight becomes the key object than wildlife which changes the total genre of your wildlife photography to a meaningless landscape.

So use the sun as your flash. Try to keep the sun in such a position where it’ll illuminate your object. Then take a position between the wind and animal where wind flows towards the objects, not towards you. And if you get this perfect position then you need not to edit your photo on the computer a lot which will make your photo more natural.

Take Continuous Snaps

Use your burst image option as most of the time animals are moving objects & within a moment the whole photo environment can change. Burst or continuous mode is available in most high or low budget digital cameras. So, if you take at least 5 continuous photos, the possibility of getting more accurate & variant photos will be increased. Even many photographers intended to take a snap & after taking a burst image they found more beautiful photos in burst series.

But remember you’ve memory limitations, camera issues & other things to think about. So, don’t take more than 5 images because more images will make you busy for more time. And as more time you’ll be busy in one frame, the chance of missing other frames will increase. That’s why to take continuous shots, but be aware of where you’ve to stop & switch.

wildlife photography tips 3

Conclusion

Since in many cases, it’s a part of travel photography, but wildlife photography itself is a big branch of photography for a wide variety of objects. Millions of researches were done on it. And if you want a practical example we’ll just give you the example of the national geography & discovery channel. Just keep your eyes on those channels. You can see for yourself how big this industry is. So, don’t think too much & just start capturing the life of beautiful creatures.

19 Camera Setting Techniques for New DSLR Users

So, as an absolute beginner of a DSLR camera, maybe you are not about sure how to use it. You probably have found yourself with so many keys and buttons. You are not sure about their functions. You are rather intimidated. You have found yourself in a large thick manual, but not interested in going through that. You probably have switched to “Auto” and started taking photos. But, if you have really bought that camera for something more classy more creative, then you need to do more than that. You need to go beyond “Auto”.

Now, if you are in the above-mentioned position, then this post is for you. Here we are going to discuss settings and techniques for new DSLR users.

DSL Camera Settings Tips

1. Learn How to Hold Your Camera

The first thing you need to know is how to hold your camera. Many people spend days and weeks and still can’t hold their cameras properly. You need to hold it in your palm like you can control the focusing, with another hand you have to control other buttons and options.

Camera Setting Techniques

2. First Know Camera Modes

The first place you need to start is the camera mode. You will find the shooting modes on a dial labeled like “A+, P, M, Av, Tv” etc. If you select the Auto mode, the camera will do everything on its own about the exposure, aperture or shutter speed. The mode is actually the command you are giving your camera. It is how you want your camera to behave. Other than the Auto mode, all other modes have specific features.

For example, if you select the Av or A mode, it means aperture priority mode. With this mode, you have set the aperture and the camera will now set the shutter speed. We will discuss that in the next point more broadly.

3. Aperture Priority & Shutter Priority Mode

The aperture is the size of the lens opening. Through this opening, light passes when the shutter opens. So, if the aperture is larger, more light passes into. Aperture is an important value of the camera. It affects the depth of field. If you are going to take a photo of a landscape view, you need to have a large depth of field. But if you are going to capture a portrait image or a single person then a shallower depth of field will do the job.

Another semi-automatic mode is shutter priority mode. If you have a slow shutter speed, it means the shutter will remain open for a long time. So, more light is allowed to enter into the sensor to be captured. Now if you are going to capture a fast-moving object, then you need to set your camera shutter speed low.

4. Maintain the White Balance

Beginner photographers always have a problem maintaining the color. So, earlier shot photos are often found with a yellow tinge on the tooth or eyes of subjects. So, you need to set your color properly and maintain the white balance. When you are taking a photo in a sunlight, it is warmer light. So, it will have redder wavelength light. But when you are shooting in a cooler light like a fluorescent lamp that will have blue component.

5. Try to Understand Histogram

Often people find the histogram scary. But there is nothing to be scared of. At first, it may appear difficult, but if you can interpret the histogram, you will find it useful. You will be able to understand from histogram if an image is overexposed or underexposed.

6. Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB)

This is another important technique you should remember. You can take good captures even in worst lighting conditions with AEB. It is one of the top unpopular settings of a DSLR camera.

7. Understand the ISO

ISO measure the sensor sensitivity to light. It is originated in film photography and means same in digital photography. ISO is numerically represented from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. ISO 100 means low sensitivity and ISO 6400 means high sensitivity. In film photography, there are different sensitivity levels in different shooting conditions.

It controls the amount of light required by the sensor to gain a given exposure. At ‘low’ sensitivities, your camera will need more light to achieve a given exposure. But in high sensitivities, you need less light to achieve the same exposure.

8. Try to Understand the Exposure Triangle

The exposure triangle means the combination of the three features- the aperture, the shutter speed, and the ISO. These three are interlinked with each other. And to take control of your camera, you need to learn to control them. If you change one of them there will be the subsequent consequence on the other two.

9. Learn About Metering

Metering is when you take a photo, with automatic exposure, aperture priority or shutter priority, the camera finds an average exposure. So, when you take a snap of a bright white scene, the image appears darker than the actual scene and vice versa.

The scene is always averaged by the camera. You can fix the areas of the scene to be assessed by the camera. Thus you can influence exposure metering.

10. Exposure Compensation

There is a button that has +/- marked on it. This is there for exposure compensation. It will help you to increase or decrease default meter reading considering actual brightness of the image. This is an important technique you need to learn.

11. Know about File Size and Type

There are different sizes of files we will capture. They can be small, medium or large. They have different resolution and different quality. Better quality images will have more storage. You may find them all same on the camera screen. But when you will zoom in you will be able to clearly measure the difference between them.

12. Using Focal Lock

Many beginners do not understand for a while how all digital cameras focus automatically. If you don’t learn how to do it you’ll take a lot of shots out of focus subjects and in focus backgrounds! Well, in this case, the subject becomes an object and the object becomes subject.

13. Camera Flash

Using the built-in camera flash can be crucial. Sometimes it may ruin images. Without flash, you were having a nice image and suddenly the flash ruins it all, this is a common scenario.

14. Know your focusing

It does not matter what camera mode is on, it does not matter whatever the aperture, shutter speed or ISO is there, if your focusing is not right, you will never get the image you are expecting. It is always advised that you understand and focus on your own manually.

15. Avoid Dirty Camera Sensor

The best way you can ruin your images and camera is making the camera sensor dirty. It directly interferes with your image quality. No matter how good your camera is and how good you are, your image quality will be ruined.

16. Clean Your Camera

Try to clean your camera frequently. This protects your camera from dust. Thus you will be able to maintain its performance.

17. Shutter release

Shutter release technique is another important technique beginner photographers need to learn. The image quality depends a lot on it. Knowing when to release the shutter makes sure best quality images are captured.

18. Fill your frame

You need to have a point of interest in every image. Get as much close possible. A closer shot is always a better shot. So, this will create a feeling that you are standing right next to it when you will see it. And always keep your horizons horizontal.

19. Never stop learning

When it comes to learning something, there is no end to it. Keep learning, wherever whomever, possible, available. It does not matter.

Since it is not that much collaborative as the manual, but it is enough to get you the basic ideas and help you to take control of your DSLR. If you simply go through the settings and techniques we have mentioned here, it will be enough for you. Then you can keep going and keep learning.

This camera is basically the replacement of Rebel T4i ( Canon EOS 650D ) which is also a very popular three-digit model of canon camera history. Though in terms of its same level model Nikon5200 the AF is a little poor, in terms of other features this is a recommended one. For your information, it is also called 700d so you can consider it as a canon 700d review or EOS 700D reviews as well!

EOS Rebel T5i

Technical Features

Camera Sensor

Let’s start with the sensor. this camera uses CMOS sensor which has a resolution of 18 megapixels. Though this is not a big upgrade from the past models, still a considerable fact for beginners.

It’s 18.0 Megapixel assists to take in-depth images. As a result, you can enlarge the images with a sharp quality as you like. It is able to record up to 16,348 colors per channel. By which EOS T5i provides great detail output.

ISO

The sensor has a built-in ISO which you can vary from 100 to 12,800. ISO varieties will easier your photo shooting when the sun covered with clouds or at night time.  The more ISO options available the more snapping facilities you will enjoy. The great flexibility is you can also extend the ISO to 25,600. It is a common thought that using high ISO causes noise in the photo. But EOS Rebel T5i has the DIGIC 5 Image Processor which is really superb to reduce the noise. Besides, by adding a hybrid autofocus system you can improve the focus performance by its sensor itself.

Video Quality

In the case of videos rebel t5i offers full HD 1080p videos, though there is grading for frame per second. For 1080p videos you can capture 24, 25 or 30fps max.

And if you want to go higher like 50 or 60fps then you’ve to reduce your video resolution to 720p. That’s why for taking sports photos there are limitations.

EOS 700D Reviews

LCD swivel display

The key difference between the smaller canon 1100D & canon rebel t5i is the LCD swivel display. You can vary the angle of this display to different points which will give you the comfort of targeting your objects from different locations.

For example, under sunlight sometimes the shades of photographers lie between the camera & object which is very irritating.

In those cases, you can change your position and then vary the angle of your display somewhere convenient and then shoot your object peacefully.

The touch screen display also enhances your comfortability which has made it better than canon 600D.

Connectivity

The main technical limitation is having no built in Wi-Fi for transferring the files to your computer or other devices. Besides, there is no option of controlling the camera by remote control too. This is the main barrier of this camera for not being recommended for intermediate users.

Design & Performance

Canon T5i has a stainless steel chassis accompanied by a polycarbonate resin shell which made it not only beautiful in look, but also flexible to carry & durable than other models.

Though some parts may feel plastic (i.e. around the flash housing), the matt finished rubberized grip areas around the body is really impressive.

The mode dialer is 360 degrees and very smooth to operate than previous models. Button quality is also improved. This model is very fast in capturing photos & videos and also a high performer in switching between the modes. Besides, there are many other built-in photo editing options within this camera those has made the performance higher.

It has a nine-point focus system which is very good, but the autofocus is relatively slower than related models. In addition, you can’t get continuous AF performance like other same level models.

This is a big limitation of this camera performance. But the performance of the fps is quite good. The option of sensor cleaning and burst photo performance is also nicer.

So, after all these analyses and comparison among the technical specs, design & performance in a nutshell we can conclude this canon t5i reviews with the following pros & cons table.

  • Exclusive noise control feature.
  • Touch screen display.
  • The display is also swiveled which can help you to check previews from the front side.
  • Video capture performance is better than near models.
  • The lighter body that is comfortable to carry.
  • It doesn’t have a Wi-Fi built-in option.
  • Limited Auto Focus Option.

Conclusion

After the release of Canon 650D, photo enthusiasts were eagerly waiting for canon 700D or rebel t5i. And we think the overall canon t5i specification, design & performance didn’t make them frustrated at all. Even Nikon freaks in some cases switched themselves to canon rebel t5i. But for Nikon users, we’ll say on Nikon because they’ve also some fabulous camera models.

DSLR Camera Modes : A Guide You Should Not Miss!

DSLR Camera Modes : A Guide You Should Not Miss!

You have got yourself a camera, but you are not sure about how to use it. Because, as soon as you have unboxed it, you have found that it has come with so many buttons. Now you are not sure about their functions. Learning the camera mode and selecting the modes to meet specific needs means mastering the dslr. A dslr camera comes with so many modes. Each has distinctive features to meet different shooting conditions. If you can learn them properly, you will be able to select the right one at the right moment, and then your moment will be best captured. Here we have discussed some dslr camera modes selection guide for photographers.

Dslr camera modes: Let’s Start!

First of all, it’s mention worthy that, depending on the brands or manufacturer the camera mechanisms or functions might be different. But we’ll discuss on the most common functions that maximum brands have.

Other than Auto mode, all other modes have specific features.

camera mode selection tips

For example, if you select the Av or A mode, it means aperture priority mode. With this mode, you have set the aperture and the camera will now set the shutter speed. We will discuss that in next point more broadly.

Semi-Automatic Modes

Aperture Priority Mode

The aperture measures the opening of the lens. Light gets inside the through this opening as the shutter opens. So, light gets in more if the aperture is more and light gets in less if the aperture is less. Normally aperture is measured.

We measure aperture in ‘f-stops’ and show it by ‘f-number’ like f/2.0, f/2.8, and f/4.0. Aperture is the ratio of focal length and diameter of the opening. Wider opening results due to larger aperture and a smaller f-number (e.g. f/2.0). On the other hand, a smaller aperture results in a narrower opening and a larger f-number (e.g. f/22). Reducing the aperture by one whole f-stop, e.g. f/2.0 to f2/8 or f/5.6 to f/8.0, it means reducing the light entering the camera to half value.

Aperture priority is one of many moves of the camera. Another parameter that depends on the aperture is the depth of field. With a low aperture, you can get a shallow depth of field with a large aperture large depth of field. The depth of field if larger, means you can focus on a large area, like a landscape. And if it is smaller, it means you are going you are going to focus only on the subject.

Shutter Priority Mode

Shutter priority mode is another mode of the camera. In seconds or fraction of seconds, shutter speed is calculated. As the name implies, slow shutter speed means it remains open for a longer period and allows light to get into the sensor. And if it is a fast shutter speed then it will remain open for a shorter period. Stationary objects are captured using fast shutter speed. But for capturing a fast moving object, you need to have a slower shutter speed.

Automatic modes

If you are at the beginner level, this is a most friendly mode for you. With Automatic mode, your camera finds the best shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, focus, and flash to take the best shot. There are some cameras which have an automatic mode that overrides flash or give red eye reduction. You can get best shots with this types of cameras. But always remember that your camera is guessing your choice, it does not know that for sure.

Portrait Mode

If you are looking for a portrait image with shallower depth of field, focused on a specific subject, stationary, fast shutter speed, then it is the mode. It is popular to take our personal photos. With this mode, you may only cover your upper body part or a small subject, the background remains blur mostly and out of the frame.

Macro Mode

Another camera mode is Macro mode. It will let you move your closer to your subject to take a close up picture. Macro mode is most suitable for capturing the images of flowers, insects or tiny objects. Macro modes in different cameras come with different abilities. With macro mode, the depth of field is very narrow, so focusing is pretty much difficult. You need to keep your camera and the object parallel.

Landscape Mode

Landscape view is opposite of the macro mode. It has a large depth of field. So focusing is easier. Because you don’t have to focus anything specific. Just make sure the metering is right.

Sports Mode

Sports mode is suitable for capturing fast-moving objects. The shutter speed is slow to set for that. It is also known as an action mode. When you are capturing fast-moving subjects chances of capturing them with panning of your camera can be increased along with the subject and/or by trying to pre-focus your camera on a spot where the subject will be when you want to take the shot.

Night Mode

Night mode is specially programmed for low light conditions. This mode typically comes with better ISO. The flash is automatically turned on.

Movie Mode

You can also capture videos with your DSLR camera. You can set the resolution and sizes. It can be panoramic, snow, fireworks, underwater, beach, kids, indoor or foliage mode.

Manual Mode

There is also completely manual mode. In manual mode, you have to select everything manually. When you can get to the expert level, you can try with this manual modes. You will then understand which capture requires which level of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and other features.

Few Basics Irrespective of Modes of a DSLR Camera

Understanding the ISO

ISO means how much your sensor is sensitive to light. It is represented numerically from ISO 100 to ISO 6400, even more depending on the camera. A lower value means lower ISO and a higher value indicates higher ISO. ISO determines the amount of light required by the sensor to gain a given exposure. The camera will need more light to gain a given exposure at low lights, but, with the higher sensitivity, it needs less light. For shooting indoor, you need higher ISO to increase the sensitivity and multiply the light available. Thus you can get a better image.

Understand the Exposure Triangle

The aperture, the shutter speed, and the ISO- These three are interlinked with each other. And to take control of your camera, you need to learn to control them. If you change one of them there will be the subsequent consequence on the other two.

Consider a condition where you have ISO400, f/8.0, 1/10th second. Now if you want a shallower depth of field and aperture f/4.0, you have to increase light to camera 4 times. Then to balance the exposure you have to reduce shutter speed or ISO by a factor 4. Also, shutter speed and ISO both by a factor 2 combined.

Metering

There are three metering modes:

Average: The camera will assess and expose the scene to 18% gray.

Centre-weighted: The camera weights the exposure and totals up to approximately 80% of the scene.

Spot Metering: The camera will use a very small area of the scene that totals approximately 5% of the viewfinder area.

Exposure Compensation

There is a button that has +/- marked on it. This is there for exposure compensation. It will help you to increase or decrease default meter reading considering actual brightness of the image. If the scene normally has bright tones and rendered too dark, you can have positive exposure compensation. This will command the camera to take the scene lighter than usual metering. If a scene, on the other hand, has dark tones and rendered too light, you can use negative exposure compensation. This will command the camera to take the scene darker than usual metering.

Know your focusing

There are different types of focusing. DSLRs come with auto focusing techniques. The autofocusing can be single or continuous. If you are taking a snap of a stationary object then auto focus single is good, but if you are taking a photo of the fast moving object then you need to select the autofocus continuously.

Final Verdict

This post will give you some confidence to control and use your camera. You will start exploring all the features and thus you will understand the difference between different modes. On the other hand, different cameras have different modes Begin with aperture priority and then shutter control, soon, you will be able to go beyond that and master all those modes once appeared scary to you.
